What is a Skills Assessment?

Skills Assessment is the process of recognising an individual’s skills and knowledge. Typically these skills and knowledge match the requirements of an Australian Qualification. The process is sometimes referred to as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Normally the assessment process will consist of a practical demonstration of skills, within a workplace. Where this is not possible, then a simulated activity can be performed.

How many years of experience is required to be assessed?

In simple terms, most trade qualifications require at least 4 years experience. For an accurate appraisal of your needs, contact us to discuss your experience.

Where is the assessments conducted?

All assessments are conducted in a live workplace environment. If this is not possible, due to confidentiality, then Chef Central will arrange for the assessment to be conducted in an alternative location.

How long does it take?
    
This depends the motivation of each candidate, however generally takes from 3 weeks to 3 months.

How much does it cost?

This is dependent on the following: your location, the qualification you require and residency status. Contact Chef Central for more information. Government funding maybe available.

Do I have to go to Chef Centrals office?

Only for the enrolment process, after this the assessor will always travel to you.
The enrolment can be conducted online if necessary.

Do I have to have the assessment conducted in my current workplace?

This is the better option, if unable to Chef Central can provide a commercial kitchen for this activity.(Depending on your location)

I hold an overseas qualification; will this count towards my Skills Assessment?

In simple terms YES. Chef Central will accept and utilise overseas qualifications as part of the evidence base, within the Skills Assessment process. It must be realised that most Australian Qualifications, require additional skills and knowledge that is aligned to the Australian Standards and Australian Safety Standards.

What qualification do I need to be a Chef?

On completion of an Australian apprenticeship a Certificate III Commercial Cookery is awarded. This is the minimum requirement for the trade.
